Unkitawa
“Unkitawa” is the Lakota word meaning “ours,” “yours,” and “mine.” It embodies the concept that what belongs to each of us individually equally belongs to all living things. As a registered 501(c)3 organization, Unkitawa supports Indigenous Relatives in King County and beyond. Through our programs, cultural workshops, and community events, Unkitawa shares Indigenous culture in respectful ways to help heal our people. Unkitawa proudly offers a wide variety of Indigenous-led programming.
Through our Reentry Program, relatives inside of prisons get the cultural and community-based support they need to succeed upon release. Navigators connect recently released relatives to resources to help decrease recidivism.
Unkitawa’s Veterans Program helps Indigenous veterans navigate benefits available to them. Our Veterans department also hosts weekly and annual events and workshops to build community while sharpening Veterans’ artistic and cultural skills, like carving, drumming, singing, painting, and more.
We are also proud to offer a holistic Indigenous Wellness program that operates programming for Indigenous people and their families; they share cultural art workshops, feed our elders traditional foods at monthly Luncheons, and operate a first foods pantry, providing urban Indigenous folks access to traditional foods and medicines.
